The word 'smudge' comes from an old English word which means smoky fire through which cattle were driven to cleanse them of unwanted insects.  This practice of using smoke especially the burning of sage is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a person, group of people or space of energies that do not belong. While Native American sage burning is the most commonly recognized form of it today, it has nevertheless been a shared practice in other cultures too.  Native American sage burning is the most commonly recognized form of it today, it has nevertheless been a shared practice in other cultures too.

The ritual burning of herbs and herbal resins is common to many cultures in the world. From the rich frankincense of the Church and the Middle Eastern bazaar, to the heady incenses of Asia.  From the ancient Celtic druids who used sage as a sacred herb alongside Oak Moss for burning as well as for medicinal purposes, to the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon whose Palo Santo  (sacred wood) sage burning ceremonies are still practiced to this day.  The purification of space through this modality is a global phenomenon and one you can benefit from highly.

Some of the sacred plants used in this formula come North America and include a mixture of different sages, cedar and juniper. Other imported European sacred plants have also been added making this formula a power house of clearing herbs while smelling great!

When, where, what to Smudge

Smudging can be personally useful when you are feeling depressed, angry, resentful, or sick.  It also literally helps clear the air after an argument with someone.

You can smudge your home,  work space, crystals or any other objects of  negative or lingering energies as part of a general spiritual housecleaning routine

Before ceremonies or celebration it is common practice in many cultures to smudge yourself, the space and all of the guests or participants beforehand.

Smudging yourself or others

First of all ask the plants to please help clear and thank them for their assistance.  Next set your intention out loud or quietly that you wish to clear  yourself or others of all negative or lingering energies that do not belong.  When smudging one's self, spray the Smokeless Smudge mist on your hands and around your body from head to toe.  You may want to especially focus on areas where you feel there are blockages or where there has been or is physical, emotional or spiritual pain.  Imagine the liquid mist lifting away all the negative thoughts, emotions and energies that have attached themselves to you.

If smudging another please do not do this with your hands as your energy may be passed to them.  Use a feather or some object other than your hands to move the mist around the other person and have them set their intentions of clearing themselves.

Clearing Houses or any Space

First of all ask the plants to please help clear and thank them for their assistance.  Next set your intention out loud or quietly that you wish to clear the space of all negative or lingering energies that do not belong.   I spray a feather or clean feather duster with the Smokeless Smudge and start at the outside door moving anti clockwise through the house clearing each room including all of the upper corners and closets.  You will need to refresh the duster with more smudge as you go along.  After clearing the entire house and as I come to the outside door I simply open the door and let the wind take the unwanted energies away. Usually I say another thank you to all involved in the clearing process and close the door.  Ahhhh the house feels clean and clear once again!
